Unwanted adventure

There has been just a little too much excitement around here over the past few days.  Caleb has had a propensity for developing chesty coughs with all of his colds, and we've had him on breathing treatments (via nebulizer) off and on since he was about one.  He went to bed on Thursday with a sniffle, and woke up on Friday with a full blown wheezy cough that ended up being pneumonia (again).  He spent the entire day at the doctor's office as it was difficult getting his blood O2 levels stable, and over the low 80%.  Even after repeated breathing treatments with oxygen and antibiotics (via IV......NOT fun...poor daddy had to manage that one) we couldn't get his levels over the magic 92-93% level.  We checked in to hospital around dinner time, and spent a long night with breathing treatments every 4 hours, frequent checks by various doctors, and struggling to get an overtired, cranky, sick 3-year-old boy to keep the oxygen mask on and not fuss with the blood oxygen monitor attached to his (little) big toe.  He was hooked up to the same monitors that gave me flashbacks to the NICU and even L&D, or the constant visits to the perinatologist when Zoe and Caleb were in utero and I'd go in for weekly monitoring.  Thankfully by late afternoon on Saturday he had turned around, and even while sleeping during naptime, his levels didn't cause the alarm on the monitor to go off and stayed above 92%!  I know he's a "big boy" now at 35 lbs and 40" tall, but when your kid is sick, he's your little helpless baby all over again.

We spent the rest of the weekend and Monday staying close to home, with one follow up to his regular pediatrician.  In that time frame I've cleaned the entire house, we cleared out their room of any upholstered furniture and carpet, got all the post-kitchen remodel tools and debris out of the house, and ordered the #1 consumer reports rated air purifier + allergen pillow cases and mattress covers.

Thankfully, he is on the mend, and the rest of us are just fighting the cold.  My heart goes out to anyone who has ever had to spend a single night in hospital with a little one!!
