January 2009

January has proven to be the month where Zoe and Caleb's language has really taken off. We now like to bring "doggy" and "pa-puss" (platypus) with us, and demand "outside!" and complain "cold!" once we get there. They can say their teachers' names, string together the sounds of things we say all the time: "howrrryou?" and "sssokay" and use two and three word combos like "no more diaper (Caleb hates diaper changes)" or "Zoe seat? (to sit down)"
They can communicate just about everything they want. Unfortunately, they know that you know what they want, so when they don't get it, a tantrum results. But it's easier to distract them with some other toy or game now. They scold each other with "No! Sit down!" when they climb on the chairs/table, so I guess we are saying that a lot!

Little sleepyheads, a few minutes after waking one morning.
Right before bed, after reading a story with mommy in the rocking chair.
They love the little table-and-chairs set we got at IKEA, that has this indestructible top that wipes off remarkably easy. When I'm here with the kids be myself, I've found sometimes that it's easier for them to have dinner on the small table, with me next to them, mainly so it is less bending over for me to pick up food off the floor.
Caleb is a very methodical little boy who has to explore everything with total concentration. He loves sitting and building block or lego towers. He is quite the little snuggler.
Zoe gets excited about grand and deliberate movements like scribbling, splashing in her apple sauce, or squeezing a whole banana through her fingers.
The inauguration of President Obama dawned cold but clear. People lined up down on the mall at 1:00 and 2:00 AM to get a spot in front of the Capitol or along the parade route, and the whole town was buzzing with energy and excitement for the days leading up and immediately after January 20. The mall was no place for children, so it was the only day I have ever kept the TV on for most of the day, and let Zoe and Caleb watch when they were interested. Zoe was completely enamored with the violinist that played a little before the new President took the oath of office.
Zoe can say "O-ba-maaaaa" but Caleb prefers "Obamama"
