New Year's Resolutions

At the turn of this year (spent in true low-key fashion in front of the television), S and I both commented on how time is hurtling by at a not-very-comfortable pace. Where are the tiny little babies we brought home in April 2007? There are these two little people running around, singing made up songs, telling stories, playing with tools and crayons and insisting on pulling out and stacking all the canned goods from the pantry.

It's a lot more fun to hang out with Zoe and Caleb now. They'll tell you what they want, when they want it, and can be effectively bribed with dum-dums (yes, they still make those tiny lollipops that I remember getting at the People's Bank drive-up window in Darien way back when). They go into the fridge to get their own snacks (blueberry yoghurt is the new favorite), then get a spoon out of the drawer, pull up a chair, and munch away. They've been sufficiently brainwashed by their neat-freak mother to put the spoon in the sink and the empty cup in the trash. We let them decide that they wanted their cribs next to each other (rather than doing gymnastics to stretch across the divide and then yank them together anyway) so nap and night time are going smoothly again. They still like to be right next to each other when they sleep, and Zoe is the little mommy who rubs Caleb's back when he coughs or fusses!

2010 has already shown itself to be a year of change. S is settling nicely into the new schedule and assignment at work, and we are all really happy to have him home in the evenings. He's been able to get involved in more extra-curricular activities and work outs (in addition to the part time job that is getting this old house in order...next projects is a total kitchen re-do this spring). We put it off for long enough and had to get that second car, but the extra wheels make errands a lot easier. I gave notice at my job, after about two and a half years there, to take a new position still in D.C. but more in line with my interests. We've been able to find a regular babysitter, and the teenage girls next door are always willing to step in so we can go out for an hour or two after bedtime, and I've signed on with a running club and for a few races this spring. I was talking to a friend on the phone the other day...we concurred that maybe things will slow down and be less hectic when we retire in 50 years!

I have a few resolutions for the year....hopeful to hit at least one or two...and some for Z&C:

Z&C -- 2010 will be the year for potty training and big kid beds!
Mom -- Get back in shape (thus the running club), spend more time with friends and family (we have our first beach vacation sans kiddos in May!), manage the guilt from being a working mom (uphill battle), cook/bake more often (easier when it's cold outside anyway...), and get blog posts up on the kids more than once a month. Wish me luck.
