Darien

We decided to try flying to see Lola and Grandpa in CT last weekend, which was probably NOT the best way to travel. The flight into NYC is so quick from DC that there was no opportunity to walk around with the kids, and they were not amused with having to stay in one, general area (our row of three seats) for a whole hour. Next time, we'll drive.

As much as I know the APA says no TV before kids are 3, especially for boys, due to the possible link to the possible increased possibility of ADHD...we got the dual portable DVD player for the car. I'd like someone from the APA to come and sit in my car when my two very angry 17-month olds are screaming and throwing things with nothing to do in the car seat, that they are too young to understand that they have to stay strapped into. I would do almost ANYthing to get them to quiet down just enough so that I can see straight (and drive). Baby Einstein "meet the instruments" is a big hit.

The reality is that I bet every mother starts off thinking, "I'll breastfeed for more than a year!","My children will only ever get organic food!","I'll just work out while they're napping and get back into my pre-pregnancy wardrobe in no time!" And the weight of the whole, new reality of motherhood sets in, and Goldfish and Cheerios (not super-expensive organic multi-grain omega-3 "Os" from Whole Foods) are just fine. And as much as there may be the time to work out/nap/relax, that "free" time competes with laundry, pre-cooking baby dinners because it is not fun to have to do anything but microwave when the kids decide from one second to the next that they want food NOW, mopping up the tiny pieces of spat-out rice pilaf from the floor, researching pre-schools because they all have a 12 month waiting list (minimum) in the city, and trying to get a few work emails off because you feel guilty that you left work early last week so the kids wouldn't spent more than seven hours in day-care. (Where, incidentally, Caleb fell off the jungle gym again and bit through his lip, so it was a madhouse of screaming and blood yesterday...)

I've decided I am now going to just cut myself the same amount of slack that I give my other parent friends: clear my closet of anything in a size 6, blithely ignore the laundry that needs putting away, order in pizza for everyone's dinner, and update the blog. But you'll have to excuse me -- the monster piece of chocolate cake on the nightstand is calling me.

Hamming it up

Caleb was enjoying having the armrest cover on his head for a while
Caught in the act!
Riding on the push car for the blocks
C loves to lie down in the wagon and get pulled around, watching the world go by. Zoe has learned how to tickle.

It was a hot and hazy afternoon in the backyard, but the kids liked running around in the grass.

Hi Lola, I have a stick!
All done playing...let's go inside for snack time.

  1. Oh, as you know, I know how you feel! I don't think the guilt ever ends. We definitely need to get together soon for a run (or maybe a drink?) :) By the way, I didn't think it was possible, but Zoe and Caleb are just getting cuter and cuter!
